BREUNING WINS IN THE DESERT!

Returnee Donald Strout took the pole position at Phoenix, with Patrick Day in 2nd. Breuning and Eaglen shared the second row on the grid. As always, the racing was tight on the 1-mile oval, with all four drivers chasing each other closely. Day and Strout took themselves away from that action by pitting early, will Breuning and Eaglen stayed out.

More cautions brought it all back together. On lap 63, Breuning and Strout touched, sending both to the back of the lead lap after pitstops. Breuning benefited from a gap on the high side on the restart, making up 3 spots.

A late yellow on lap 71 took the back markers to the back of the line, with Breuning and Day fighting for the lead and Peterson and Forrester doing the same for 3rd. Day, having sustained minor damage from the cause of that final yellow, saw Breuning take the win by 0.043 of a second while Peterson snatched the final podium spot from Forrester.

WINEINGER GRABS LAGUNA!

Although Breuning started from the pole and took the lead initially, Darryl Wineinger took advantage when Breuning spun around coming out of the corkscrew on lap 9 and never looked back. Breuning didn’t hit anything and returned in 4th behind Mike Erter and Bill Smithem. Both pitted a few laps earlier than him and when the pit stops were done, Breuning was in 2nd with a 4 second deficit on the leader. He closed in little by little, but not enough to be a threat and Darryl Wineinger took the checkered ahead of him. Smithem was 3rd, Erter 4th and Phil Peterson scored a 5th place after a strong a consistent race..

Breuning wins the Season 13 championship, with Bill Smithem 2nd and Mike Erter 3rd.

DAY GRABS UNEXPECTED WIN AT POCONO!

Robert Love was back for the Pocono race and showed his intentions by taking the pole. As always, the racing was close and fierce at the tricky triangle. On lap 27, Love and Day touched, but luckily both could get fixed up and remained on the lead lap. After the restart, the field split somewhat, but with less than ten to go, they bunched up again and it was anybody’s race.

On lap 48, Stuart Wright scraped the wall and couldn’t be avoided by Shinoski, who took a literal ‘leap of faith’. The race finished under yellow with Day ahead, joined on the podium by Rodrigues and Breuning. Love and Wilson rounded out the top 5.

Breuning secured the championship with his 3rd spot, so the final race next week at Laguna Seca will be for bragging rights mostly.

BREUNING SURVIVES DAY AT MID OHIO!

Patrick Day, returning to the series after a long hiatus, was blazingly quick, although Breuning beat him to the pole by 0.002 of a second in a ‘do-or-die’ lap. Day instantly took the lead and though Breuning could hang with him, there wasn’t any viable attempts to challenge the lead. On the 9th lap, however, Day spun around. Breuning barely missed him and took over the helm. Despite Day being faster and closing in, Breuning never relinquished the lead again, helped by the fact that Day had another off.

Behind them it was Bill Smithem defending 3rd from Mike Erter, while Matt Shinoski took 5th after a good race with Don Warren.

BREUNING GETS A BREAK AT PORTLAND!

Pole sitter George Sandman led the first 29 of 45 laps with Breuning doing everything he could to just stay within a second of him. He never got close enough to threaten Sandman, until Sandman went wide in the final section of the track and Breuning could sneak through to take the lead. It was enough for him to stay in front and win the race, ahead of Sandman and Mike Erter. Newcomer Matt Shinoski was 4th and Bill Smithem rounded out the top 5.
